Styles of Piano Cabinet

The differing styles of case, or cabinet, that have appeared on both upright and grand pianos reflect the manner in which fashions have changed over the last 150 years. From the earliest cottage upright to contemporary modern, one can see the gradual loss of decorative styles in favour of the simple and - one might say - economical designs of instruments produced today.

This is apparent to a lesser degree in grand pianos, and the changes that have occurred are less striking than in uprights. Legs, pedal-lyres and music-rests have become plainer, but the general shape of grand pianos remains very much as over 100 years ago.

By way of illustration we have taken photos of both uprights and grands, grouped according to the various eras of piano-manufacturing, which we hope you will find informative.

Almost all of the pianos displayed are instruments that have passed through our workshops, and have been fully restored by Courtney Pianos.
